British Values

  • The Rule of Law

  • Democracy

  • Individual Liberty

  • Mutual Respect

  • Tolerance for those of different faiths and beliefs

    To do this our children will develop;

  • An understanding of how citizens can influence decision-making through the democratic process

  • An understanding that the freedom to hold other faiths and beliefs is protected in law

  • An acceptance that people having different faiths and beliefs to oneself (or having none) should be accepted and tolerated, and should not be the cause of discriminatory behaviour

  • An understanding of the importance or identifying and combating discrimination

Here are some examples of how British Values are embedded in the curriculum:

  • Children are taught to be kind, helpful and respectful of others;
  • Children are taught to take an active part in their local community;
  • The school marks festivals and special days from the world around us;
  • Children are taught about compromise – some people believe one thing… some  believe something totally different… but all can play together in the same house (or group setting) and respect each other.

British values: teaching about similarities and differences.

  • Children are taught to work together –  projects may involve everyone in the provision and there are group times, where children learn to listen, take turns and value contributions from others. This is a very important part of British values: teaching about shared values and working together towards a common goal;
  • Children are taught about the world in which they live, the world on their doorstep and the wider world – through books, posters, planned activities, resources and outings etc;
  • Children are taught to listen and respect others.

Children learn about life in modern Britain:

  • Children learn about the world around them and use the seasons, weather, special days etc to plan meaningful learning experiences.
  • Children learn about Britain, the work of sculptors and artists to inspire creativity, listening to music to promote dance and drama.
  • Teaching is conducted using the library and online sources of information and children are supported as they learn to respect others by introducing music, dance, art etc from around the world.
